I Hate Bandwidth Thieves
For years I've seen people linking directly to pics on my site (there's a whole world of weirdness in /crud/ but I'd advise against going there unless you want your eyes to sear)
The usual remedy was simple; I have a local pic of the goatse guy to which I added "Please don't link directly to pictures on my server" (Here it is if you're so inclined) then I'd rename the linked pic, change the html to reflect the change and symlink the goatse pic to the stolen image. It worked but it was too time consuming.
So I thought "Screw you. PHP time." You'll now see most of the images around this dump being displayed via a PHP script. A link to one of those on another site gets the goatse guy.
It warms my heart.
The big problem are those browsers and proxies which can forge the referrer. I don't think I'll be too draconian (yet) so if they forge the site name, so be it.

No wonder Websense said you were tasteless... n00b.
If you want to keep other users from linking your images, first make sure that they know you dont like it. By putting pictures on your server, you are making them available to the world: if you want that convention to be broken, make sure you let people know before they get the goatse guy.
Likely websense wont change your rating, but I'm sure your readers would appreciate if you werent such a jerk about your linked images.
'n00b'? He's been online in one form or another (BBS, pre-WWW, WWW) since I've known him, about 25 years.
(G, we need to get out for another BeerFest!!!)

To look at, NOT steal. An analogy for you...just because a store displays merchandise, for everyone to look at, does NOT mean that it's OK to take whatever you want without payment.
>I'm sure your readers
>would appreciate if you

It's people who hotlink images that are the jerks. THEY are not paying for the bandwidth. If you don't like it that's just too damn bad.
Thieves deserve whatever they get. Period.
1. who gives a crap what "websense" says? screw websense.
2. "n00b"? only n00bs call people n00bs.
3. "by putting pictures on your server, you are implying an offer to host said images for free for every other website in the world" That's the first I've heard of such a convention. Hotlinking has never been seen as ok. It's only lately with the influx of ignorant new users who don't understand concepts like bandwidth and servers that this kind of conduct has become common. See point 2.
4. Why the hell would his legitimate readers care? They're only going to be effected if heavy hotlinking brings the site down. They'll certainly never see the goatse image.
"To look at, NOT steal."
ffs that's just too daft
nothing's been "stolen"
copying is not stealing, even though the MPAA wants you to think so
avoid their newspeak
that being said, "hotlinking" is a bloody nuisance; goatse, tubgirl and lemonparty the bastards!
Gordon you dumbass, why are you involving PHP for this? Just use apache to do it.
